Carter was born in Phoenix as the daughter Juanita (nee Cordova) and Colby Carter. Her mother is from Mexico, is Mexican, Spanish and French. A brother named Vincent, and one sister, Pamela, are her siblings. Carter appeared on public television for her debut on Lew King's Talent Show at age 5. Carter joined a group called Just Us during high school. The group was comprised of marimba, conga drums an acoustic guitar and stand-up basses. One girl from the group also played guitar. Lynda began singing in a restaurant when she was 15. [8] At 16 years old, Lynda joined two cousins in forming another group, The Relatives. The drummer in the band was Gary Burghoff, an actor. The band performed at the Sahara Hotel and Casino lounge in Las Vegas for three months and because Carter was under 21 , she had to enter through the kitchen.Carter attended Arizona State University. She was voted "Most Talented" and decided to venture into music. Carter auditioned for The Garfin Gathering in 1970. She later went on tour with Howard (Speedy), Garfin. Their first concert together was at the Holiday Inn Chinatown in San Francisco that was so brand new that it didn't have sidewalks. The hotel's staff as well as hotel guests parked their cars in the garage underground, which meant that they would be performing to their guests. The Garfin Gathering played shows in several Nevada casinos, such as those between Lake Tahoe, Carson City and Reno. Carter had to quit the Garfin Gathering to pursue acting in 1972. He then returned to Arizona.
